In Year 2 we start every day with Guided reading through whole class reading. We read a range of texts, unpicking the vocabulary before delving into: the actions of the characters, logistics of the text, differences and similarities between other texts, finding information and what we like about the texts. We will start the year looking at different Winnie the Witch stories by Valerie Thomas. In the afternoon we then complete another reading session through our phonics scheme by the Fischer Family Trust. We have the opportunity to read some exciting stories together, complete some acting and immerse ourselves within the text – check out our FFT big book to see what we have been up to.

During the morning, we focus on English, Maths and Phonics (through our whole scheme by the Fischer Family Trust) which are tailored to suit the needs of the children in the class. We encourage independence as well as adult support during these sessions.  In Maths, we have a focus on providing a wide variety of resources and problem solving through the use of the White Rose Maths Mastery. In addition to this, we provide opportunities for the children to solve SATs-style questions, called Secret Agent Training, to prepare them for the end of the year.

As a school, we value the each and every subject within the curriculum to make sure every child has a chance to showcase their talents. Every Monday is ‘Curriculum Day’ where the children will complete Science and Geography or History in the morning and then PSHCE in the afternoon. The other wide curriculum subjects are taught in the afternoons, along with Handwriting, Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar. Alongside these sessions, children will have booster groups and some children will have specific interventions to help with confidence, consolidate and maximise learning.

Throughout the year, your child will be engaged in a variety of captivating topics: Explore the magic of Mr. Majeika and the whimsical world of Winnie the Witch. Encounter notorious villains in Inside the Villains and navigate the antics of the Big Bad Pig. Embark on historical voyages with Paddington Bear and discover the intriguing events in Samuel Pepys’ Diary. Dive into the depths of the ocean with The Storm Whale and Tad during our exploration of life Under the Sea. Discover the heart-warming story of Giraffes Can’t Dance and explore themes of individuality and acceptance. Conclude the year with adventurous tales featuring Peter Pan and the thrilling escapades of The Enormous Crocodile. These texts do change yearly based on the cohort of children, their needs and their interests!

In Term 5 This will also be our Secret Agent Training (SATS) term where we be formally assessed in Reading, Maths, Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar. Our writing will be assessed by our teachers and moderated across the school.

We highly value your support in fostering your child’s resilience and love for learning. Engaging in reading, homework, and discussing their learning with you plays a crucial role in their growth and development. Thank you for working with us on this exciting educational journey!
