Year 1 follow a new topic every term; some of these include: All about me, Dinosaurs, Space, Traditional tales, Farm to fork and Summertime. Through this we teach a more formal curriculum in the mornings with guided reading, English and Maths lessons. Children also receive phonics and SPAG (Spelling, Punctuation & Grammar) in small ability groups daily.
The transition from Reception into Year 1 is very different to what they have experienced before. At the beginning of the academic year we take time to introduce and provide routine so the children settle in with ease.
In the afternoon we take a more personalised approach to how we teach all topics; we follow a rotation system in which we teach PSHE, Science, Geography, History, Art and Design, Music, Computing and Physical Education. Alongside this, we also teach booster sessions in a number of core areas including fine and gross motor skills, handwriting and letter formation and additional Maths, English and phonics.
We have an outdoor accessible garden area where our outdoor learning provision is sited. Every child in Year 1 will have the opportunity to access our Forest School outdoor learning programme on site. In addition to the learning that happens in school we also look to provide many outside experiences and trips, which will benefit the physical, intellectual, emotional and social development of all children.
