Intent
At John Henry Newman Academy, we value a maths curriculum that is both creative and engaging. It is our intention that all pupils are provided with the best possible learning opportunities, using teaching strategies which are proven to be effective and evidence based. We follow a ‘Mastery approach’ to teaching mathematics which gives children the opportunity to develop their: fluency in number, mathematical thinking skills, coherence and the opportunity to practise maths in context to develop resilience when challenged with problem solving type activities.
Implementation
During their time at John Henry Newman Academy we would like every child to develop as a confident mathematician. The five big ideas (fluency, variation, mathematical thinking, coherence and representation) influence all of our teaching, planning and thinking. In order to do this, the mathematics curriculum is based around fewer topics to ensure learning is securely embedded. We have a strong focus on number, deepening knowledge, applying the children’s skills and developing reasoning. Every child is working together, in their classroom, on the same material providing excellent opportunities for whole class discussions. The children’s learning is differentiated through the support provided for them and their own specific intended outcomes at the end. Children are not grouped based on ability so all the children in one class will have access to the same learning materials.
All pupils have access to concrete resources to help develop their understanding further. This closely links with the pictorial and abstract representations teachers will use with the children. The teachers carefully plan in variation to enable pupils to benefit from making small links within their learning. Guided work sessions are used to draw our pupils’ reasoning, allowing them to spot patterns and develop mathematical generalisations. For our higher attainers, pupils’ knowledge is deepened through explanation and evaluation to ensure they have a deep mathematical understanding of all concepts. Every mathematical topic, in every year group, is mapped out through a sequential learning journey to ensure every small step is planned meticulously to ensure children have access to the mastery maths curriculum.
