Outdoor Learning Intent

At JHN, Outdoor Learning is one of our core ‘Well-being at JHN’ subjects, sitting alongside P.E, R.E and PSHE.  Through our core Well-being subjects we aim to teach the core values of Love, Community, Courage and Celebration so that children and everyone in our community can ‘let their light shine’.

Learning outside of the classroom and out in the natural world is an invaluable part of a child’s development and well-being.  At JHN we recognise that for most people, a large part of the day is spent indoors and in this century, in front of screens or technology. Teaching children of their place in the natural world, particularly with the encroaching climate emergency, is one of the most important lessons we can pass on.

Before they leave JHN, children should have had the chance to:

  • Learn about the natural systems of the planet and the interconnectedness of organisms within these systems.
  • Recognise the many physical and mental benefits of being out in nature and had several educational visits centred around the natural world.
  • Have a positive impact on their local environment: through observation, through study and through conservation of some kind.
