English – Writing Inspired by Ancient Greece
In English, we explored Ancient Greece through a variety of writing styles. The children wrote non-chronological reports about their own mythical creatures, diary entries based on our trip to the Ashmolean Museum, narratives featuring their creatures, and even diamante poems inspired by the Ancient Greek Gods. It has been wonderful to see the children’s creativity shine through their writing!
We have also been enjoying free writing sessions, where the children write continuously for a longer period of time. This gives them the opportunity to apply all the writing skills they have learned and express their ideas creatively.
Science – Exploring Light
In Science, our topic has been Light. The children investigated how light travels, how it reflects, and how it reaches our eyes and allows our brains to interpret what we see. The class loved taking part in hands-on investigations and exploring how light behaves.
PE – Learning Handball
In PE, Year 5 learned how to play Handball. The unit ended with a fun match between Hertford and Somerville, with the boys and girls competing against each other. Everyone showed great teamwork and enthusiasm.
Computing – Creating 3D Games
In Computing, we explored the world of 3D games. The children learned how games are designed and even created their own! It was fantastic to see their creativity and problem-solving skills come to life through their game designs.
Ashmolean Museum and Exeter College Visit
This term, we visited the Ashmolean Museum to explore their Ancient Greece exhibition. The children had a fantastic time learning about Greek history and artefacts while taking part in a guided tour of the museum.
Year 5 also visited Exeter College to learn all about birds. During the day, the children took part in four activities including bird watching, creating their own bird, bird bingo, and a treasure hunt.
Jack Peers Adventure
Hertford class also enjoyed their first trip to the Jack Peers Centre this term. The children spent the day exploring the outdoors and taking part in exciting activities. It certainly looked like a fantastic adventure!
